Full-Day Beekeeping Short Courses for the Public

Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Maritz

Fenton, Missouri

The Basic Course.(Gillard and Winer) The Basic Course is for beginners with no prior beekeeping experience. The course covers all aspects of basic beekeeping including honey bee biology, urban and suburban site location, purchasing and assembling equipment, procuring bees, hiving packages, dividing colonies, and producing, harvesting, extracting, bottling, and selling honey and hive products. The course will also cover the basics of disease and mite management and control. There will be opportunities for questions and answers.

The Advanced Course. (Reuter) This course is a review of the information provided in the Basic Course, with special emphasis on managing overwintered colonies. This course is for experienced beekeepers only. The main focus will be on wintering your colonies and on making divides in spring to prevent swarming. There will be discussion of disease and pest management techniques, emphasizing how to decrease reliance on chemical controls. There will be opportunities for questions and answers.

The registration packets will include course materials, beekeeping periodicals, and equipment catalogs.

The short courses will be followed throughout the season by field workshops and equipment and honey bee procurement projects.

Grant Gillard, Vice President of the Missouri State Beekeepers Association

Gary Reuter, Staff Scientist at the University of Minnesota, Department of Entomology

Joli Winer, 1st Vice President of the Kansas Honey Producers Association

Grant Gillard, a beekeeper from Jackson, Missouri, is an articulate and innovative leader in Missouri beekeeping. He is a frequent speaker at state and national beekeeping meetings, and is the author of several articles published by the American Bee Journal. He is also President of the Jackson Area Beekeepers.

Gary Reuter has contributed to some of the most significant honey bee research ever conducted in the United States. Since 1993, he has worked with Dr. Marla Spivak, Professor of Entomology at the University of Minnesota, to help honey bees and beekeepers by reducing the amount of antibiotics and pesticides used in beehives to control diseases and parasitic mites. Their studies have led to the development of the Minnesota Hygienic line of honey bees, a major advance in breeding effective mechanisms of resistance to varroa mites and brood diseases. He is also the past President of the Minnesota Hobby Beekeeping Association, and the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association.

Joli Winer, a resident of Spring Hill, Kansas, is 1st Vice President of the Kansas Honey Producers Association, and an owner of Heartland Honey and Beekeeping Supplies. Ms. Winer is a leader in beekeeping education in the Midwest. An organizer and leader of many state and regional beekeeping workshops, Ms. Winer is also a frequent presenter and instructor at beekeeping courses. She is an expert in urban beekeeping, honey plants, hive products, and marketing.

Space is limited, and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

Registration closes February 13th, unless filled sooner. There will be a waiting list, if needed.
